Quilt by hand

Last night I was looking closely at a small quilted wallhanging I made in the 1990's.  It was an experiment in value, block distortion, miniature stencil application, and hand quilting (to accomplish movement).

Value, Block Distortion, Mini-Stencil, Hand-Quilting

The blocks are called Bleeding Heart, Ohio Star, and Churn Dash.

Ohio Star is distorted in the top center and the right center positions. Churn Dash is distorted in the left center and the bottom center positions. The 'normal' blocks reside in each corner.

By stretching the Ohio Star and Churn Dash, there's a circular movement created, enhanced by the hand quilting.

The overall feel of the quilt says tradition to me and by using the Americana mini-stencils, those little references are sprinkled within the Bleeding Heart block.

To follow are some detail shots.

Ohio Star Distortion.  I drafted the block and used paper-piecing technique for the tiny bits.

Americana Mini-Stencil, Stipple Quilting

The Mini-Stencils I used were some I picked up in Houston, Texas, USA during an International Quilt Show in the 1990's.  The center red is quilted with a technique called 'stippling'.
