I don't remember what year it was when I took a Bog Coat class from Virginia Avery, but the making of it fit in with my aesthetic: use simple shapes to make clothing. I wrote to her after the class (yes this was when we used snail mail) and asked permission to teach the Bog Coat. Her gracious response was yes as long as I didn't use her materials. After hearing back from her, I started researching the Bog Coat and developed a twelve page pattern booklet in 1995, A Bevy of Bogs. I taught classes on the Bog Coat and as well, made many, some of which sold, and I don't have photos of those. However, I do have quite a few images to include here to give you some ideas about the versatility of this simple pattern.
Recycled Wall-Hanging Bog - I made this from an all wool wall hanging that I bought at a Thrift Store in Napa CA.
Kente Cloth Bog - Purchased rayon and cotton blend fabric. The sleeve is pleated.
African Bog Tri-Part Design - This is the design I came up with that has appeal for quilt makers, since the design is based on combinations of fabrics.
Art Deco Bog - Made from a polished cotton decorator fabric and completely lined with a luscious black and white rayon fabric. This is a bit tricky and is a good example of how to cut one single piece of directional fabric to fit within the Bog Coat layout.
Christmas Bog Shrug - Based again on the tri-part design, but with a shrug treatment.
Wool Plaid Bog Vest - I could write an entire article on this Bog because of all the design details incorporated in order to utilize one piece of fabric, and still have pockets and get a slim fit all within the Bog Coat framework. This piece was sewn by hand.
Recently, I reactivated the Facebook page: Wearable Art, an open group. Included on the banner was a Bog Coat, and upon some discussion, a member suggested that we have a Bog Coat challenge. This suggestion seemed to dovetail nicely with a way to acquaint people with the Bog Coat (should they be new to the design).
Have you made a Bog Coat? Would love to hear from you!
Wow Victoria these are so so so beautiful, sophisticated, fun ...love this blog of yours.
ReplyDeleteI remember those early days with the Bog Coat. I made at least one coat for each of my children. I still have fabric that was meant for a coat for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan! I appreciate your feedback. Lani, please tell your children hi for me? Maybe one of these days that fabric meant for you will be done up in a Bog! Cheers to both of you.
